Here we go again. It is time I report back from Last Week at the Auction. America’s Favorite Top 10 List of Auction Results from around the Globe. I am humbled to be you tour guide to this wonderful secondhand subculture. And I am proud to bring you the latest from the world of auctions, estate sales, yard sales, garage sales and thrift stores.
There is a treasure hunt going on every day, and I want you to get in on it. My hope is these posts inspire and illustrate the potential of this lesser known market. If you like this sort of thing, it really can be a career or a very profitable hobby. I hope you enjoy today’s list and better yet, have a few new takeaways. I learn something every week. Here goes.
MURDER
#10 is a Dan Tague Oil on Paper that brought $650 at New Orleans Auction Galleries, it was 19" by 13" and titled MURDER…find a few of these and you could make a real killing.
MCM LIGHTING
#9 Stilnovo Italian Table Lamp that brought $2400 at Heritage. Circa 1970 and approx. 26" tall, mid-century lighting is hot. Keep your eyes peeled. These are at your local thrift stores.
SAMPLERS
#8 A George II Needlework Panel just sold for $3250 at ABELL. The 14x15" sampler style embroidery is just the kind of thing you will come across a nice East Coast Estate Sale and I am sure you will now take a 2nd look at the price tag.
A MARVEL
#7 is The Avengers No. 1 that hammered for $6500 at MATTHEW BULLOCK AUCTIONEERS. A 12c Ungraded Comic from Marvel, circa 1963, would be a pleasant find and again…they are out there.
YOUR SHIP MIGHT COME IN
#6 A Large Chelsea Ship's Bell Mantel Clock just landed $10,000 at HINDMAN. Nautical collectors will pay a premium for fine, early examples. Be on the look out for 19th Century finds like this. This historically has been a collector base with deep pockets.
NANCY'S WEB
#5 is a Signed Daum Nancy Vase the brought $10,000 at Woody’s. Only 6" tall but super rare. Note that unusual Spider Web design. The French Cameo Art Glass collectors were all on it.
X-MEN
#4 HUGH JACKMAN's Wolverine leather jacket just slashed $12,000 at DOYLE. From X-Men Days of Future Past, this was one of 4 jackets made and worn by Hugh during the filming. I actually think this was a great buy as a future resale investment.
PLAY BALL
#3 the McLoughlin Bros. Zimmer's Baseball Game brought $16,000 at POOK AND POOK. This c.1893 board game was quite rare and depicting players from the earliest days of America’s Favorite Past Time, there is no wonder it hit a homerun. Being a recovered board game collector and baseball fan, I was completely drooling over the catalog from this sale. Go check out the results.
BUY LOW, SELL HIGH
#2 A Chinese Carved Cinnabar Box with a $300-500 estimate just sold for $22,500 at HINDMAN. From the late 19th or early 20th century and 13 " diameter, this further illustrates what I have been saying about Chinese antiques. If you see them cheap, buy and consign with a reputable online auction house. It’s a crazy market.
HOLY HOCKEY PUCK
#1 A Hockey Puck from the 1928 Stanley Cup Finals just sold for $55,000 WEISS AUCTIONS. Finally, Hockey getting some serious sports collectible respect. It’s about time. Historically baseball has been the king with some flashes in basketball and football, but I love seeing Hockey getting some real love. Lets see if it’s a trend.
